Giving Tree Sunday 2009

December 5 & 6

You are invited to be a part of our St Joseph Parish Tradition of the Christmas Giving Tree, begun by Sister Robert Joseph, and the cornerstone of our holiday giving for 30 years.

This year is especially meaningful, as Sister Robert cannot be with us to tell our Giving Tree story and ask for our contributions. We hope to do our best and send word to her that her beloved Tree has been fruitful and not been forgotten.

Our tree is decorated with doves, angels, and stars.

The Dove decorations have the address of our shut-ins, and those in nursing homes or care facilities. If you choose this decoration, one of our committee will be at Mass to give you the name and phone number of your Christmas friend, then you are asked to visit the person named, taking a small gift remembrance. Perhaps you will form a wonderful friendship and visit again during the year !!!

The Angel decoration is a request to help a family in need with a food box and some small gifts. To protect confidentiality, the family is identified by a number. If you choose an angel, one of our committee will be at Mass to give you the family name, address, and phone. You can then arrange a convenient time for delivery. You may also wish to join with a friend or another family in providing for your Angel family.

Stars are a request for gift cards of any amount (Wal-Mart, Fred Meyer, Safeway, etc.) to be given either at this holiday for our late requests, or during the next year. Purchasing these from our own PTO (at the scrip table after Mass or in the parish or school offices) will also help our school. ——double gifting!!!

A baby crib is next to the tree, for new layette items – blankets – receiving and crib size, disposable diapers – all sizes, burp cloths, pacifiers, baby toys – rattles, etc., clothing especially sleepers – both boys and girls, to be donated to Catholic Family Services.

There are envelopes beside the tree for your contributions to our most important fund —THE GIVING TREE FUND. Your gift, in cash or check, will be used for the needy, not only during the holiday season, but also throughout the year. This year we do not have separate envelopes for other causes, but contributions will be given to: HOSPICE, SAFE HARBOR and THE ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY from the funds we collect.

We invite children also to share with those in need. Please explain the purpose of the Giving tree to them and let them use the small envelopes to share with the less fortunate at this Holy Time of year.

The Kennewick Food Bank at 420 W. Deschutes with hours: Monday – Friday 8 to 11:30AM. is well organized for the distribution of food and staples to the needy. Perhaps a family project could be a trip there, with some canned goods or paper products. We will accept food, etc. at the church but it will be donated to the Food Bank.

The St. Vincent de Paul Store at 120 N. Morain welcomes all good, clean, used clothing and blankets. Those people we send to them are helped without cost. Please take your contributions of these items to them.

May this 30th Anniversary Giving Tree reflect our parish commitment of reaching out to those in need throughout the year?

Thank you for your support and generosity.
May the Blessings of the Christ Child be with all of you.

Do You Want to Read the Bible, But Don’t Know How to Begin?

If you have ever wanted to read the Bible, but did not know where or how to begin, then The Bible Timeline Parish Study is for you.  The Bible Timeline makes reading the Bible not only easy, but exciting. In this study, you will learn the major people, places, events and themes of the Bible—getting the “big picture” of salvation history. Perhaps for the first time in your life, you will understand the overview of the Bible story. This then makes your Bible reading and even the Sunday Mass readings come alive like never before.

The Bible Timeline will be offered at St. Joseph in Dillon Hall on Wednesdays from 7 - 9PM beginning October 7th.

To learn more, check the bulletin in the coming weeks.

Stewardship Message

“Be doers of the word and not hearers only…” - James 1:22
What do you do to live God’s word?
Do you share time and talent with your parish or those in need?
Do you support the work of the Church with the fruits from your own work?

This Week’s Stewardship of Time and Talent Salute

We salute our teachers, both at our school and the public schools, as they begin a new year helping our young people to reach for their greatest potential.

Let us pray that we may not only hear God’s word, but also learn to live it every day of our lives.

This is the miracle of the Catholic Church, Emmanuel, God-with-us, not the multiplication of the loaves, but the multiplication of the Tabernacles. This glorious Presence is the center of all. It makes each Church, each Monastery, each convent a Heaven upon earth to which His tired children can come and be strengthened and be sustained by the Living Bread of God. This is the reason of His Presence in the Tabernacle. “Does This Shock You?” by Louis Kaczmarek

Time spent with Our Lord, is truly, time well spent, as you come to enjoy the peace that only Christ can give.

Hats Off to our Youth Group

Members, Shane and Lexi Tiffany, Kaitlin Barnes, Alex Pickel, Emma Bayuk, Isabella and Cassandra Klein, and Anne Marie and John Driver were part of a group that picked over 200 lbs of cherries donated from the St. Hilaire Farm and given to seniors in two housing complexes in downtown Kennewick. The seniors were thrilled with the cherries and it was a great way for our kids to give back the the community!

Stewardship in Action

Stewardship Message

He instructed them to take nothing for the journey but a walking stick – no food, no sack, no money in their belts.” - Mark 6:8

How different we are from the Apostles who took nothing when they ventured out to serve God?

Today, we make our journey through life more difficult because of all the material baggage that we drag along. Yet, the more we can let go of, the freer we are to serve God with love and joy.

This Week’s Stewardship of Time and Talent Salute

We salute our Perpetual Adoration Chapel Adorers for being so faithful during the year -- especially during the summer vacation months. We know the added graces our parish receives from these prayers help make our parish the wonderful parish it is.

Everyday-Everyway Stewards

Let us pray that we may learn from the Apostles to give up our strong attachment to material possessions.

Our Children’s Stewardship

Use some of these questions at dinner time to help get the conversation headed in the right direction.
  • Do all families live as we do?
  • Why do we have more than we really need?
  • What can we do about the inequity in the world?

Rejection at the Pearly Gate, too:
A cab driver reaches the Pearly Gates and announces his presence to St. Peter, who looks him up in his Big Book. Upon reading the entry for the cabby, St. Peter invites him to grab a silk robe and a golden staff and to proceed into Heaven. A preacher is next in line behind the cabby and has been watching these proceedings with interest. He announces himself to St. Peter. Upon scanning the preacher’s entry in the Big Book, St. Peter furrows his brow and says, “Okay, we’ll let you in, but take that cotton robe and wooden staff.” The preacher is astonished and replies, “But I am a man of the cloth. You gave that cab driver a gold staff and a silk robe. Surely, I rate higher than a cabby.” St. Peter responded matter-of-factly: “Here we are interested in results. When you preached, people slept. When the cabby drove his taxi, people prayed.”

Stewardship Message

As the Lord spoke to me, the spirit entered me and set me on my feet, and I heard the one who was speaking say to me, ‘Son of man, I am sending you…’” - Ezekiel 2:2-3

God sends each of us to do some special work for Him. And, He gives us all the talents that we need to do that work. However, do we listen to God when He calls? Do we get up on our feet and give our time to do the work God asks of us? This is the basis for good stewardship.

This Week’s Stewardship of Time and Talent Salute

We salute everyone who helped with Sr. Robert Joseph’s Garden Party. A wonderful time was had by all!

Everyday-Everyway Stewards

Let us pray that, in a spirit of service and sacrifice, we may generously use our time, talent and treasure to do the work which God has placed us here on earth to do.

Our Children’s Stewardship

Use some of these questions at dinner time to help get the conversation headed in the right direction.
  • How does giving up something help us draw closer to God?
  • How does giving up become gaining?
  • Jesus often ate with people. What do suppose they talked about when they ate together?

THE POWER OF PRAYER

This story is from close to home and I thought it really proves the power of prayer.

A handful of years ago, Jarryd Hasfurther was diagnosed with Wegener's Granulomatosis, (Wegener's granulomatosis is an uncommon disease in which the blood vessels are inflamed (vasculitis). This inflammation damages important organs of the body by limiting blood flow to those organs and destroying nonnal tissue) and had to have (and has since) many hospital visits to specialists from coast to coast. St. Frances Cabrini Parish, Benton City made him a prayer bead chain - each person picked a bead, said a prayer and strung it on the string. Ann Marie, his mom, said it was a good, good thing, and he carried it - about 100 beads - to all his appointments.

So, this year, Jarryd is graduating high school, and is a very active person. THE power of prayer.
THANK YOU GOD!

These changes will take place in June. We will announce definite dates as they are set. Plans are being made for going away and welcoming receptions.

St. Joe Successes

Elsa Schmitz, daughter of Dave & Nancy, (SJS 2006), has been selected by the People to People Student Ambassador Program to join their student delegation and travel to Australia this July. Acceptance into the program is based on her demonstration of leadership, citizenship, and willingness to venture into the world in the name of peace, friendship and understanding.

The students will participate in an educational exploration program founded by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The students will learn about the world through hands-on interaction with local government officials as well as serve a greater purpose through community service projects designed to help the environment.

Elsa's acceptance into the program is due in part to her exceptional education and commitment to community service she gained at St. Joseph School.

The family asks the people of St. Joseph to keep Elsa and the delegation in their prayers for a safe and enjoyable trip.

Elsa, we hope you have a great time!

Stewardship Message

“Children, let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth.” - Acts: 9:31

How do we love in deed and truth? The answer is through stewardship – giving some of our time to spend with Our Lord in prayer, giving some of our talents to do ministry in the parish, giving some of our financial blessings to support the work of the Church.

This Week’s Stewardship of Time and Talent Salute

We salute our welcoming committee for working to invite and make our new members feel at home.

Everyday-Everyway Stewards

Let us learn to surrender our own wants and desires to God, trusting that God will always give us all that we need.

Our Children’s Stewardship

Use some of these questions at dinner time to help get the conversation headed in the right direction.
  • What is your favorite blessing?
  • Is your list of blessings different from or the same as the others in your family?
  • Which of the blessings cost money and which have no relationship with money?
  • Are you surprised by how God blesses you?

RCIA

What has RCIA been doing after the Elect and Candidates received their Initiation Sacraments at the Easter Vigil? After their initiation into the Catholic Church, the Neophytes (new seeds) begin the Period of Mystagogy.

Mystagogy – meaning reflection on the mysteries – is a time for them to dwell on and ponder with joy and awe their experience with the Sacraments at the Easter Vigil. They savor the experience of the Holy.

It is also a time for meditating on the Gospel and performing works of charity, which is how the Neophytes become integrated into the life of St. Joseph’s Catholic Community.

If your organization would like to meet the Neophytes, please contact Pete Braun, 783-3556.

Stewardship Message

“It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes.” - Psalm 118: 8-9
Too often our society trains us to take refuge in man-made riches. Yet Thomas Merton once wrote, “There is no poverty so great as that of the prosperous.” Too many possessions can leave us empty - always questing for more things that do not really matter - while we ignore Our Lord.

This Week’s Stewardship of Time and Talent Salute

We salute everyone who helped with our First Eucharist and Confirmation ceremonies and receptions last weekend.

Everyday-Everyway Stewards

Let us learn to trust more in God’s goodness rather than in the allure of power, money or possessions.

Our Children’s Stewardship

Use some of these questions at dinner time to help get the conversation headed in the right direction.
  • Do we need money to have fun?
  • What is contentment?
  • What family activities cost little or nothing, but are really great?
  • If God is always with us, do we ever really need to worry about money?

Use some of these questions at dinner time to help get the conversation headed in the right direction.
  • Is it fair to give to others in need? Why?
  • Why do we get excited about new clothes and school supplies?
  • Is God more important to us than the good things he gives us?

“Everyday-Everyway Stewards”

Let us see all of our blessings as abundant gifts from God, placed in our hands so that we may use them for the benefit of all God’s people.

This Week’s Stewardship of Time and Talent Salute

We salute everyone who helped the First Eucharist Retreat & Reflection including those who took our student “breads” from the foyer then gave with the prayers and cards, etc.

Stewardship Message

“Then he said to them, ‘Why are you troubled?  And why do questions arise in your hearts.  Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself.’” - Luke 24:38-39  These words from the Risen Christ are good advice when we are troubled or doubtful about our stewardship decisions.  Justlook at the hands and feet of the Lord.  How can we refuse to be the hands and feet of Jesus here on earth now when He sacrificed His entire body for us?

Conscience Rights Under Attack!

We Have to Act before April 9th, 2009
Remember: The Only Way Evil Triumphs is for the Good to Remain Silent

(We ask those who may have responded to the first issuance of this alert to follow the steps to send it
again. The email linkage to HHS malfunctioned, but the problem has been resolved. We apologize for
the inconvenience and thank you for your advocacy on behalf of conscience rights.)
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has published a proposal to remove a
current federal regulation which serves to protect the conscience rights of health care providers. That
regulation is one part of the range of legal protections for health care workers-for doctors, nurses and
others-who have objections in conscience to being involved in procedures that are against how they
live their faith.
”Religious liberty and freedom of conscience have been building blocks of our society since its
founding. We respect conscientious objection for those opposed to war, physicians opposed to taking
part in capital punishment, and others who object to involvement in the taking of life” said Cardinal
George, President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). His message via
video as well as more information about the devastating effects of this proposed rule change can be
found at http://www.usccb.org/conscienceprotection .
We are now within what is called the public comment period (until April 9, 2009), when all Americans
are allowed to express their views on this proposed rulemaking directly to HHS. To let HHS know
that you want conscience protections to remain strongly in place, especially for those committed to
freedom of conscience, the sanctity of human life, and the ethical integrity of the healing professions:

The fastest way to respond is by email: http://www.thewscc.org/news-folder/conscience-rights-under-attack
then click in appropriate places to send your comment or email direct to HHS at proposedrescission@hhs.gov or Public Comment at: http://www.regulations.gov/fdmspublic/component/main?main=SubmitComment&o=090000648090229f
or go to http://www.usccb.org/conscienceprotection to see Cardinal George’s Video then respond

Stewardship

Stewardship Message
“If anyone should say to you ‘Why are you doing this?’ reply, ‘The Master has need of it and will send it back here at once.’” - Mark 11:3 “Why are you doing this?” This is a question that could be asked of anyone who gives time, talent or treasure to the Church. An answer is found in the Gospel of Mark, “The Master has need of it…” We are all called to give because Our Lord has need of it.

This Week’s Stewardship of Time and Talent Salute
We salute Jennifer Hickman for spearheading our Women ofGrace Conference. It was a great success!

Everyday-Everyway Stewards
Gratefully offer back to Our Lord the time, talent and treasure He has given to us so that we may help complete His work here on earth.

Our Children’s Stewardship
Use some of these questions at dinner time to help getthe conversation headed in the right direction.
Why does giving make us feel good?
What reward should we expect from God?

Blessing of Easter Baskets

A Blessing of Easter Baskets will take place in St. Joseph’s Church on Holy Saturday, April 11th at 2:00PM

RCIA CORNER

Today and the next two Sundays, those preparing to enter the Church at Easter celebrate the Scrutinies.  The Scrutinies are part of the Period of Purification and Enlightenment and are a celebration of healing and strengthening in the lives of the Elect and Candidates.  They are meant to uncover all that is sinful in their lives and to strengthen all that is good in their lives.  Please join them in their silent prayer for the spirit of repentance, a sense of sin, and true freedom as children of God. Also join the prayers of intercession with your resounding response.  Please pray during the weeks ahead for our Elect and Candidates as they approach the Initiation Sacraments at the Easter Vigil.

St. Vincent de Paul Society

This month, March, has a fifth Sunday. Every fifth Sunday we collect for the St.Vincent de Paul Society so they can continue their help to people in need. Next weekend the ushers will be at the doors of the church to take your donations. Please be as generous as you can. If you like you can send a check to the Parish office and we will see that it gets to this great group of volunteers. We have been told that their food fund is quite low and in need of replenishment.

Stewardship

Message
“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son…” - John 3:16
Of all the wonderful gifts that God has given to us, the gift of His own Son is truly the greatest. How can we ever thank God for a gift like that? God does not ask us to sacrifice our own precious firstborn, but He does ask that we make some sacrifices for Him.
This Week’s Stewardship of Time and Talent Salute
We salute all those who are using their Rice Bowls during the Lenten Season.

Our Children’s Stewardship
Use some of these questions at dinner time to help get the conversation headed in the right direction.
Name some people for whom you are thankful. Why are you thankful for them?
God gave us Jesus. What could be our family’s greatest gift back to God?
Do gifts to God always have to be money?
What other kinds of gifts honor God?

Eucharistic Adoration

The primary and fundamental element in adoration is an interior act of mind and will; the mind perceiving that God’s perfection is infinite, the will bidding us to extol and worship this perfection.

Jesus is waiting. Could you please help with adoration during these times?
Sunday  9AM; 11AM; 4PM
Tuesday  10PM;
Thursday 4AM; 6PM;
Friday  9PM
Saturday  Midnight; 9PM.
bold hours = no adorers.

Call Carol, 582-5011 to volunteer.
The Adoration Chapel is open to all. Please feel free to stop and visit Jesus any time you would like.

Stewardship

“You shall not carve idols for yourselves in the shape of anything in the sky above or on the earth below or in the waters beneath the earth.” - Exodus 20:4
Have you created idols for yourself in different shapes? An idol can be in the shape of money, sports, fashion, travel, or anything else that we value more than God and His Word to us.

This Week’s Stewardship of Time and Talent Salute

We salute all those taking part in Soup Thursdays -- those providing soup, setting up and cleaning up as well as those donating to the poor.

“Everyday-Everyway Stewards”

We are grateful this week for all steward disciples in our parish who try to share your wealth with the less fortunate.

“Our Children’s Stewardship”

Use some of these questions at dinner time to help get the conversation headed in the right direction.
  • Why do we celebrate birthdays?
  • Is it really better to “give than to receive”?
  • Why is God happy when we give to those in need?
