What is a Catechumen? What is a Candidate?

A Catechumen is a person who is preparing for Baptism.  The term comes the Greek meaning one who is learning.

Candidate is a person who has already received a Trinitarian Baptism and is now seeking full communion in the Catholic Church.  Both Catechumens and Candidates are dismissed to “break open” the readings of the Sunday Lectionary.

Both attend Monday evening sessions to receive a suitable catechesis to acquaint them with dogmas and precepts.

This Week’s Stewardship of Time and Talent Salute

We salute everyone who is adopting families for Christmas andhelping make Christmas merrier for the less fortunate of ourparish community.

Stewardship Message

“Do not be afraid, Mary.” - Luke 1:30 It can be a little scary to do as God asks – to give Him the first fruits of our time, talent and treasure. But the comforting words the angel spoke to Mary can comfort us, too, when we dedicate ourselves to being good Christian stewards – “Do not be afraid.”

Word of Life

Chastity is the joyous affirmation of someone who knows how to live self-giving, free from any form of self-centered slavery.  This presupposes that the person has learnt how to accept other people, to relate with them, while respecting their dignity in diversity. The chaste person is not selfcentered, not involved in selfish relationships with other people.  Chastity makes the personality harmonious.  It matures it and fills it with innerpeace.  This purity of mind and body helps develop true self-respect and at the same time makes one capable of respecting others, because it makes one see in them persons to reverence, insofar as they are created in the image of God and through grace are children of God, re-created by Christ. …
—Pontifical Council for the Family, “The Truthand Meaning of Human Sexuality,” December 8, 1995

Special Thanks

The Holy Angels Homeschoolers Group would like to extend a special thank you to Fr. Richard for his willingness to allow the Homeschool group to host and offer Our Thanksgiving Feast to parishioners and those in need.  They would especially like to thank the parishioners along with Catholic Daughters of America for their generosity for providing the items needed to host such a feast.

Thank you all!!!

RCIA CORNER

What’s been happening in RCIA since the Rite of Acceptance in November?
  • The Catechumens and Candidates are gently dismissed from the Sunday, 9 am Mass after the Liturgy of the Word to continue their prayer with the readings.  Guided by a Catechist, they “break open the Word” to deepen their relationship with Jesus.
  • The Catechumens and Candidates, along with their Sponsors and the RCIA Team have adopted a family from the Giving Tree. This activity is an apostolic outreach effort by to love and serve others.
As the Catechumens and Candidates continue their journey toward initiation, they will need your prayers of support along the way.

posada

A posada is a family celebration in preparation for Christmas.  It starts with prayers and ends with a party.  The Knights of Columbus will be sponsoring a posada for the parish on Wednesday December 17 in Dillon Hall beginning at 6PM.  Please bring your family and enjoy the festivities.
Christmas for Mexicans, in traditional homes and rural areas, is a religious holiday. It is a celebration of the Nativity. This means the birthday of Our Lord Jesus. In order to prepare for the day of symbolic commemoration, we have the “Posadas”. These celebrations are a “Novena” or nine days before the 24th which is the “Noche Buena” or “Holy Night”. These Posadas are an enactment of looking for lodging of St. Joseph and Virgin Mary, called The Pilgrims going to Bethlehem for the Census according to the Scriptures. In Spanish we called them: “Los Peregrinos, San JosĆ© y la Virgen MarĆa”. Each family in a neighborhood, will schedule a night for the Posada to be held at their home, starting on the 16th of December and finishing on the 24th on Noche Buena. Every home will have a Nativity scene. The hosts of the home are the innkeepers, and the neighborhood children and adults are Los Peregrinos, who have to request lodging through singing a simple chant. All carry small lit candles in their hands and four teenagers of about the same height are chosen to carry Los Peregrinos, which are two small statues of St. Joseph leading a donkey, which Virgin Mary is riding sidesaddle. The head of the procession will have a candle inside of a paper lamp shade that looks like an accordion but open at the top and it is called a “Farolito” or little lantern. The Peregrinos will ask for lodging in three different houses but only the third one will allow them in. That will be the house that is supposed to have the Posada for that evening. Once the innkeepers let them in, the group of guests comes into the home and kneels around the Nativity scene to pray the Rosary. The Rosary is a traditional Catholic prayer, which consists of the following prayers: 50 Hail Mary, 5 Our Father , 5 Glory and the Litany, which is a series of Praises for the Virgin Mary, plus singing traditional songs like Holy Night in Spanish of course! After all the prayer is done, then comes the party.
