The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has published a proposal to remove a
current federal regulation which serves to protect the conscience rights of health care providers. That
regulation is one part of the range of legal protections for health care workers-for doctors, nurses and
others-who have objections in conscience to being involved in procedures that are against how they
live their faith.
”Religious liberty and freedom of conscience have been building blocks of our society since its
founding. We respect conscientious objection for those opposed to war, physicians opposed to taking
part in capital punishment, and others who object to involvement in the taking of life” said Cardinal
George, President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). His message via

We are now within what is called the public comment period (until April 9, 2009), when all Americans
are allowed to express their views on this proposed rulemaking directly to HHS. To let HHS know
that you want conscience protections to remain strongly in place, especially for those committed to
freedom of conscience, the sanctity of human life, and the ethical integrity of the healing professions:

All Middle School Students Lock-In, (6-8th graders),
7PM Friday 4-17 - 9AM Saturday 4/18 in the PAC.
It’s a whole night of just games, movies, pizza, snacks and fun. $10 if you sign up on the youth board in the church foyer by Wednesday 4/15, $15 after that. The event will be limited to the first 40 midschoolers who sign up, so sign up now!
Graduating 8th Graders through Graduating HS Seniors - There will be an INFO MEETING for PARENTS AND TEENS for the Steubenville NW Conference to be held in Spokane, WA this July. The INFO MEETING will be this Sunday, April 5th at 10:30am in Classroom 101 of St. Joseph’s middle school. If you miss that meeting, there will be an additional one on Wednesday, April 8th at 7:30PM in the PAC Youth Room.

An answer is found in the Gospel of Mark, “The Master has need of it…” We are all called to give because Our Lord has need of it.
