In Remembrance of the 10th Anniversary of the attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, the Knights of Columbus will be hosting a BLUE MASS at 9:00 am on Sunday, Sept. 11th at St Joseph’s Catholic Church. A BLUE MASS is a special Mass to honor and pay tribute to all law enforcement officials, firefighters, emergency medical technicians, armed forces members, and families who serve our communities and place their lives in harm’s way to protect us.

Save Baby Patrick Fund Raiser Dinner

On Sunday, August 28, 2011, The Knights of Columbus Council 8179 is sponsoring a fund raiser dinner to help defray the high cost of medical treatment for Baby Patrick Murphy.
He is awaiting brain surgery and
donations are needed to support that effort. The dinner will be from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. and will be held in Dillon Hall.
All are welcome and any donations will be accepted and graciously appreciated. The meal may be simple but the generosity that you share that evening will be forever remembered in prayers of thanksgiving.

Volunteers needed to park cars for the 4th of July
at Columbia Park

The Knights of Columbus need additional help at Columbia Park on the 4th of July. This could fulfill service hours for confirmation candidates. We especially need help between 12-4pm and from 4-8pm. When arriving at Columbia Park, volunteers should notify the ticket seller that they are parking cars for the Knights of Columbus and they won’t have to pay to get in. Youth Schedule for the Summer

Sunday: High School Youth Activities (Games, meetups off site, general random summer fun) from 5-7 pm every week in the Youth Room unless previously announced. Incoming freshman and outgoing seniors are all welcome!

Monday: Middle School Youth Activities (Pretty much same as above, except with a short 20-30 min Bible study added to the end of each meeting) from 5-7 every week **Starting on June 20** in the youth room, unless previously announced. Incoming 6th graders and outgoing 8th graders are all welcome!

Wednesday: High School Bible Study. We'll start a series on the 7 Covenants of Scripture here in about 2 weeks. Parents and other adults are more than welcome to attend! Come to give your input or to learn more about Scripture. As a side note, I just want to share that I'm really big on making sure Catholics know their Bibles. When I was in college, I saw so many people leave the Church because their Protestant friends were better able to quote and use scripture. Let's make sure this doesn't happen in our families!

Thursday: Ultimate Frisbee and High School Movie Night. We'll be playing Ultimate Frisbee starting at 5pm, then at 7 watching random, fun, scary, or whatever movies in the youth room. Popcorn and other snacks encouraged. Middle school students are welcome, but please be aware that some of the movies may be rated PG-13, and anyone younger than 13 should have a permission slip signed. Movies will always be over by 10pm.

Saturdays: We will be having an event at least every other Saturday. This past week, it was a Car Wash helping to raise funds for our trip to Creationfest. If you have any other ideas for fundraisers or a location that would be good for a car wash, please let me know! Next week, it will be the Young Women's Retreat. If you know of a young woman who would like to attend but hasn't registered yet, please pass along this form. Space is limited, so register ASAP!

Some other activities available to all:
1.) Adoration: My adoration hours are Monday at 11 a.m. and Thursday at noon. Anyone who would like to join me or learn more about adoration are welcome to show up.
2.) A few teens have expressed interest in meeting for daily mass at 8:30. If someone just wants people to sit with or someone to meet with coffee afterward, they are welcome to join us.
3.) A group of the young adults are starting a Swing Dancing club/group. We'll be meeting every Monday from 7-10 pm in Dillon Hall. The first hour will be a swing lesson, and then we'll just have some time to dance. EVERYONE (all ages, as long as they'll follow directions) is welcome, and it's totally free.
4.) I'm on the committee for this year's Theology on Tap. If you know anyone 21+ who might like to join us for a beer and some faith talk, give them my info and I'll make sure they get an invitation.

Our Children’s Stewardship

One goal in stewardship education is to teach children that by sharing their gifts they have the power to make a difference now. If they get into the habit of waiting until a better time to be generous or share their talents, they could easily spend their whole lives waiting to be stewards. Instead, we want to encourage them to get into the stewardship habit while they are young. If they do that, it is a habit they will have their whole lives. Share this story of 57¢ to help children see that they do have the power to do tremendous work, even if their gifts seem very small.

Back in the1880’s in the city of Philadelphia, there lived a little girl named Hattie May Wiatt. Hattie was a member of the Baptist Temple, which was growing very quickly at that time. One morning when she arrived at Sunday school she found the school so crowded that she could not get in the door. She stood outside, confused and afraid to push through the crowds of children to find a place in the Sunday school. The kindly pastor, Reverend Russell Conwell, came by and saw the scared little girl standing outside with her Sunday school book and he picked her up, carried her on his shoulders and found a place for her in the crowded Sunday school classroom.

The next day Reverend Conwell saw Hattie again and he told her that he was hoping to soon have enough money to build a bigger church so that there would be lots of room for all of the children.

Some time later Hattie May became very sick. She died in 1886. After the funeral the family came to the pastor with a worn and crumpled little purse containing 57¢. They told Reverend Conwell that Hattie May had been saving the money to help build a new church and Sunday school that would have enough room for all the children. The pastor could not believe it. He had not even begun to save or raise any money for the new building. The pastor told his parishioners about Hattie’s small gift and very quickly more and more people were making donations for the new church. They all knew that if a little girl could give 57¢ surely they could give something.

Today this simple little Temple Baptist Church is one of the largest in Philadelphia with seating for 3,300 and Temple University where hundreds of students study the Christian faith every year. And they credit it all to Hattie May’s 57¢!

The Aaron Project Comfort Baskets: A True Source of Hope and Strength.

I’ve always considered myself a strong person; someone with real faults but with a real and strong faith, too. I’m certainly not the emotional type or ‘sentimental’ in any way. I generally don’t cry easily.

I can also share that I have lived through several ‘crosses’ or ‘tragedies’ as some people would call them. Somehow (by the grace of God I know) I came out of each ‘event’ a stronger person with what I thought was a stronger faith.

Then came that horrible morning in January of this year when my doctor told me the child I was carrying was dead. …Dead?

My child was DEAD?

At that moment I was no longer strong…I felt myself sinking into an abyss of darkness that even my strong faith couldn’t enlighten. Through the tears, I whispered to God that I wanted His will to be done…that I knew I would see my child again in Heaven.

But the pain of the loss was so excruciating…so deep and penetrating. The ‘crosses’ I had lived through and the subsequent pain they brought paled in comparison to the pain of losing my child.

Where was my faith? Where had my strength gone? The days passed and I found myself wandering around in a tearful daze…barely able to take care of my husband and two small children.

I needed help. I needed to lean on and learn from women who had gone through this experience. I needed to read the soothing words of others reassuring me that God did love me, that His plan in taking my child, although veiled in pain, would be extraordinarily fruitful.

Susan Hayward, a wonderful Mom I knew from our Mom’s Group was so kind and generous ~ she brought a Comfort Basket to my home and spoke with me about the loss of her son, Aaron, and how God had used that loss to bring about the wonderful apostolate known as the Aaron Project.

Once I opened the beautifully wrapped basket I knew I was going to find the help I needed. The books Susan included spoke to my soul and helped me begin the process of ‘grieving with faith’. The basket included so many thoughtful and helpful items ~ in particular there was a baby’s blanket ~ which I hold onto quite often, allowing the tears to flow.

I go through the books and items in the basket often. I need them. I need the strength they give me and the courage they provide.

The Comfort Baskets are so vitally important for women who have lost their children. I had no idea just how important until I lost my own child.

I ask anyone who hears my words to please consider finding out more about the Aaron Project and helping out as well. You will be helping a grieving mother find her way back to serenity and hope.

The luck of the Irish is coming to TRAC March 19-20, 2010
This two-day indoor event benefits St. Patrick School and Parish and includes Put the Nuns in Charge!, a Catholic comedy production on Friday March 19th and Randy Linder’s Tribute to Creedence Clearwater Revival concert on Saturday, March 20th.
It’s a weekend worth a pot of gold with plenty of food, entertainment, a car show, 3 on 3 basketball, arm wrestling tournament, the Dubliner pub and the return of the Davis Shows carnival!
Event admission is $5 and children under 6 are free.
Hours are 4 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. on Friday and 8 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. on Saturday.
Tickets for Put the Nuns in Charge! are $20 and can be purchased at the Parish office, TRAC box office, traconline.com and Kennewick Ranch and Home. This ticket price includes admission to the games.
The concert on Saturday night is 21 and over with a $10 cover charge which includes your admission to the games. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the TRAC box office, traconline.com and Kennewick Ranch and Home.

The Sound of Music

The Sound of Music will be presented by the Richland High School Performing Arts Department March 12 and 13, at 7:30 PM. The Producer/Director for this musical is Ellicia Mertens Elliott, a 1994 graduate of St. Joseph’s School, and winner of the 2008 5th Avenue Award for Best Direction of a Musical. The performances will be held in the Richland High School Auditorium. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $8 for students and seniors, and can be purchased at the door. Audience members are encouraged to purchase tickets ahead of time, and may do so beginning March 1, at the Bookworm in Richland, or Adventures Underground, also in Richland

The annual St. Joseph Book Fair will begin Sunday, March 7th, during Open House from 10:00 to 1:00. Books will also be sold each week day from March 8-12, at lunch time, 12:00-1:00 and after school from 3:00-3:45 on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. There are no sales after school on Wednesday as there is early release, and none on Friday because we will be packing up the cases for return. If you love new books and like to share stories with someone you know, please come to the elementary school lobby and see if there is something you are interested in purchasing.
Proceeds from the Book Fair will be used to purchase new books for our library.

On February 21, our Catechumens and Candidates celebrated the Rite of Sending by enrolling their names. Later that day, they celebrated the Rite of Election with Bishop Carlos Sevilla. At the Rite, our Catechumens (not Baptized) were presented to the Bishop. They were declared to be members of the Elect, that is, chosen by God. At this Rite, our Candidates (already Baptized) were recognized for their desire to receive the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist and to be in full communion with the Church. All of our Elect and Candidates were impressed with the grandeur of this event! All Parishes in the diocese that have an RCIA process were represented in Yakima on the First Sunday of Lent. Holy Family Parish was almost full.
Please continue to pray for the Elect and our Baptized Candidates as they prepare for the Sacraments of Initiation during this period of Purification and Enlightenment.

Boy Scout Troop 168

Boy Scout Troop 168 participated in the Klondike Derby on February 20. Their snow caves and igloos were widely admired by the other troops. They were the fourth team to finish all the events on the Tundra Trail. Then in the afternoon, they came in first in the 14 and up sledge race and second in the 13 and below sledge race.

A great time was had by all.

We want to thank the parish for the support you have provided over the year.

Immigration Discussion

A program will be aired on the local Catholic radio channel 100.7 FM/KHSS entitled 12 MILLION UNDOCUMENTED INDIVIDUALS: WHAT DOES CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THAT.

The program will be a 1-hour discussion featuring Fr. Matthew Nicks, Nancy Mudd Roach and Gabriel Portugal. The discussion moderator will be Tom Roach, a local attorney who specializes in immigration matters.

The program will air on Tuesday, February 16 from 5 - 6PM.
